About
The first Icon academy to open in Portugal.
The Icon Jiu-Jitsu brand was founded in 2010 by Zé Marcello. It now has more than 100 academies spread across North America, South America, Europe and Asia, and more than 15 academies in Portugal.
Ericeira holds a special place in Icon's history. It was the first academy to open in Portugal, in 2015, and still operates at that same location today with Professor Vinícius Constantino. It is also the origin of Icon BJJ Mafra, run by Professor João Gutemberg.

What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu is a complete self-defence martial art originally from Japan, made popular worldwide by the Gracie family. A major benefit is gaining confidence, and with confidence comes tolerance and peacefulness, helping you become a better version of yourself.
Can I try out a class for free?
Yes. Get in touch with us to arrange your free trial class.
What clothes should I wear? Should I bring anything?
Comfortable, loose fitting clothes are fine. Bring a bottle of water and a towel.
I'm over 40. Is that a problem for starting Jiu-Jitsu?
Not at all. Many of our students are in this age range. Classes are group-based but we attend to each student individually.
I'm a woman. Which classes are best for me?
Any of the adult classes are perfect.
I have an injury, illness or disability. Can I still train?
Our classes are fully inclusive and every student works at their own pace. Let the instructor know your specific needs beforehand and he will adapt the class.
What is No-Gi?
No-Gi means Jiu-Jitsu without the kimono. Instead of the Gi, students wear rashguards and shorts, using different grips and approaches.
Are there any rules I need to follow?
Yes. Maintain personal hygiene, respect the hierarchy and each other, never step on the mats with shoes or without permission, and leave your ego at the door. Come with a good attitude.
